The source
The source of the river Hron (980m) is located in the Upper Hron River Valley near the Low Tatras (Nízke Tatry) and the Spiš-Gemer Karst (Spišskogemerský kras), on a south-east root of Kráľova Hoľa (1946,1 m) and south-west from Besník seddle (994m), in the area of the the Low Tatras National Park (Národný park Nízke Tatry), aprox. 3 km east of Telgárt.

The mouth
The river Hron flows into the Danube (at 1716th rkm) 2 km southeast from Kamenica nad Hronom and aprox. 2 km south-south-east of the city of Štúrovo (112 m).

Description
The river Hron is 289 km long and it is the second largest river in Slovakia following the Váh.

The upper Hron
The river Hron is fast flowing up to Sliač and it has features of a subterranean river. It has a stony bottom at this stretch, mostly tree-lined shores and the difficulty level of class II rapid. The river Hron is surrounded by the Low Tatras on the right side and by the Vepor Mountains (Veporské vrchy) on the left side. The upper Hron was the most frequently used stretch of the river last year.

The middle Hron
From the junction with the Slatinka which is the left tributary, to water reservoir Veľké Kozmálovce the river flows between the Štiavnica Mountains (Štiavnické vrchy) on the left side and the Kremnica Mountains (Kremnické vrchy), Vtáčnik and Pohronský Inovec on the right. The river is recognizably slower. This stretch of the river is the most frequently used in long-term average.

The lower Hron
From the water reservoir Veľké Kozmálovce the river is surrounded by lowlands. It is a classic lowland river flowing through flooded forests. It is unusual to meet watermen there and that is the reason why there is no infrastructure of services for watermen. But it is also the reason why many tourists consider this stretch of the Hron attractive. The experience is slightly disrupted by newly-built small hydroelectric power stations with no respect to watermen.

Navigability
The largest flow rate of the Hron is in April and May, the lowest in January and February. In April and May it is possible to start the rafting already in Červená Skala but we recommend it only to experienced watermen. Car camping Gindura in Pohorelská Maša is another good place for beginning to raft in spring. For novices it is better to start rafting under Polomka. This part is usually navigable until the early June. Water level decreases in summer and then the Hron is navigable all the way to the junction with the Black Hron in Chvatimech. Attention is needed on the stretch between Lopej and Dubovany. The river is unwatered for purpose of small hydroelectric power station in Lopej. The water runs underground and on the way it takes on important tributaries as the Vajskovský brook, Jaseniansky brook and Lomnistá brook. This stretch is not navigable during the summer. Because of this it is better to begin rafting under the outflow from the small hydroelectric power station in Dubová. Further the Hron is navigable all the way to its mouth to the Danube.

There are few weirs and small number of small hydroelectric power stations on the Hron. Usually all of them are navigable.

The most problematic places:

  • The cascade of weirs in Polomka
  • The weir in Šalková
  • The small hydroelectric power station in Zvolen
  • The small hydroelectric power station in Hronská Dúbrava
  • The water reservoir in Veľké Kozmálovce
  • The small hydroelectric power station in Kálnička
  • The small hydroelectric power station in Turá
  • The weir in Želiezovce

We will inform you about a current situation and the navigability. We will warn you about a danger and a possibility of portage of the boat.

Accommodation and boarding
The possibilities of boarding and accommodation increase from the source to the mouth of the Hron. The best infrastructure is at the upper and middle of the Hron. On the other hand at the lower Hron you would not find almost anything. We will inform you about the actual possibility beforehand.

Difficulty
We recommend rafting the stretch from Červená Skala to Polomka only to the experienced watermen. The biggest problems are fallen tree trunks on the blind stretches without a chance to reach shore in time. The stretch between Polomka and Sliač is suitable also for novices but you have to take in account that you could turn over by mischance and also that there is a strong stream. We strongly recommend using a life jacket. During spring season the Hron has a higher water level due to melting snow and so a wetsuit or sufficient amount of dry clothes to change after multiple overturns is advisable. This is not a problem only during the summer season when the water level is low and when overturned you can simply stand up and walk to a shore.

The stretch from Sliač to Danube is suitable for the whole families.
